Prior to 1574?

The article only traces the Zulu people back to 1574CE. It would be helpful if someone could expand the "Origins" section to cover prior periods, even if only in summary, please. Native to South Africa

I noticed that the word "native" in the introductory section was added by an account that is now blocked: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Zulu_people&diff=prev&oldid=1126528905

I'm not knowledgeable on African history, but what I've read indicates Zulu are not native to SA. Leaving it to someone else to investigate. 87.103.58.116 (talk) 10:57, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, this is a pretty contentious topic with a lot of historiography and emerging perspectives. As far as I can tell (and please don't take my word for this), scholarly consensus seems to be that the Zulu people began as a clan of Nguni people, and the Nguni had migrated as part of the Bantu expansion (linked above), so honestly it depends on who you're asking, what you define as the Zulu people, what time-scale you're working off of, and what your definition of 'native' is. Again, we'd do well to have some folks who're better-versed in emerging South African scholarship (cf. Shalo Mbatha's works, John Lambert's writing, or the Zulu Kingdom Archaeology Project) take a go at more comprehensively (and NPOV-ly) summarizing these discussions.
