Copy vio issue?
[edit]This article seems to be a sort of partial combined copyvio, with passages from [1] and [2] at least, but with what appears to be original material as well. Stan 15:43, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Triple expansion.
[edit]The engine power is not OK. A mere 365hp or 272kW for a 100-meter ship is impossibly low. Most likely the end zeros are missing so it would be 3650hp or 2720kW.
In reply to the above: http://www.videodive.ru/films/tistle.shtml says Thistlegorm had 1860hp; however, every other Google result gives 365hp, and they're not all direct copies of each other.
Location:
Does anyone know the true location of this ship? I've found a few close but non-identical sets of coordinates eg: 27° 49' 03" N, 33° 55' 14"E and 27 48.800 N / 33 55.250 E. Thanks.
Profile picture shouldn't be a shipwreck
[edit]I don't think that it's appropriate to have a picture of the sunken ship as its "profile" picture. I can't quite say why, but it just doesn't seem like the right style -- like having a picture of a coffin on someone's biographical article simply because they are currently dead. That said, I don't know where to find free pictures of ships, or if no picture is better than an inappropriate one. Thoughts?
- --Lambyte (talk) 20:09, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- I agree but at the moment there is no free image available to put into the infobox. When it does become available, it should most certainly go into the infobox. Personally, I think that a slightly inappropriate image is better than nothing at all. That and it is better known as a rec. dive site. Woody (talk) 12:29, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Railway locomotives?
[edit]The article says there's a pair of locomotives in (along side, rather) the wreck, sitting upright. Anybody have any photos of these? --Ragemanchoo (talk) 19:32, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Pictures & Questions
[edit]I'll see if I can find some of my old pictures from this beauty of a wreck. I know I got 50 or so pictures somewhere on my old laptop. The note person asking for pictures of the locomotives might be disappointed, they where secured close to hold 4 and severely damaged by the explosion. There are however beautiful pictures of the troop carriers(upside down), rows of trucks and bikes, stacks of enfield rifles etc. I'm sure you could find a ton of those if you simply google it but if you want pictures that are free of copyright I might be of service.
A sidenote about the diving on the SS Thistlegorm. In my opinion it is described as too easy. Strong currents are frequent, choppy seas can make it nearly impossible to find the wreck and tie up a dive boat. There are also several very narrow passages inside the wreck. I would not recommend any penetration of the wreck without proper training and experience. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.13.115.80 (talk) 14:54, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Mr Rejda
[edit]The article states "Mr. Rejda single-handledly saved most of the sailors by swimming in to the wreck and towing them to safety."
Who is this Mr Rejda, and did he save these crewmembers after the vessel had sunk? Any more details on this person? The only mentions of him that I have been able to find (through a casual internet search, admittedly) are identical to the quoted sentence. Thisisgettingannoying (talk) 21:41, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
This seems like a case of sabotage. No source, no other references that I can see. I've take a fair interest in this wreck, Rejda is not an uncommon surname in Egypt but she had no Egyptian crew, nor do I find it likely that local fishermen or such where present at night in the area.
EDIT2: I did some checking with the crew interviews, there is no mention anywhere of our mysterious Mr. Rejda.
Sidenote: I have pictures from the wreck which might be of interest. Her two guns (theres only mention of one in the article), the cargo of trucks, BSA motorbikes, unexploded munitions, rifles and marine life on the wreck. If anyone more well versed in editing articles is interested in reviewing and adding these to the article, just drop me a line.

Times reference
[edit]The article says:
- "The Times named the Thistlegorm as one of the top ten wreck diving sites in the world."
In the reference it is clear this is the London Times but I think it would read better if it said:
- "The UK newspaper The Times named the Thistlegorm as one of the top ten wreck diving sites in the world."

Salvage Rights
[edit]Who has salvage for the vessel? If Jacques Cousteau found the wreck surely he had rights but apparently did not take them up. Is the vessel owned by anyone? It is a great source of income for the locals but it is also potentially an easy source of scrap metal (at less than 30m). Is it protected? People died when the ship sunk so why is it not a war grave?41.232.112.72 (talk) 17:25, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
