Wikipedia:GNU LilyPond support/historical proposal

The Wikipedia:TeX markup support has, so far, worked excellently. It fixes one problem, and fixes it well, whilst allowing migration to more fancy systems such as MathML in the future.

It has been proposed on the mailing list that essentially the same technique used with TeX be used to implement embedded GNU LilyPond markup in articles, presumably in

<music> </music>

tags. This will then be able to be upgraded to generate music markup, MIDI files, Ogg Vorbis files, et caetera later on.

Can't latex render music as well? I know it would be strange to denote music with math tags, but tex renders many characters very well. In fact i think there is something called musiX-tex.

Reading the essay at the lilypond projects page i seen now where that fails. Still instead of outputing musiX-tex like it did in 96, LilyPond does output plain tex eventually. I don't know how the wikimedia engine renders tex as a png anyways. Does it just call latex2html to generate the images? if so the implementation of a music tag based system shouldn't be to difficult. I want to hear from people who would actually write music and add it to wikipedia. Sreyan 22:22, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)
