False -- the more generic meaning of the term should be at a category with a more generic title than "Girl groups" (and linked to from this category) because there are many all-female groups which should be listed but which aren't typically called "girl groups", such hip hop crews, all-female orchestras, etc. Tuf-Kat 23:20, Sep 10, 2004 (UTC)

The first person was right. This is a joke. First of all girl groups are not limited to the United States. Second ask the average person on the street to name a girl group and their response will be The Spice Girls or Destiny's Child and NOT a soul group from the 60's try. On the contrary you are the one using a generic term to try and cover a small subsector. I've removed this qualification:

"This category is specifically devoted to the second meaning, and as such only includes all-female pop-soul groups from the early 1960s."

because this is not the way the category is being used. "Girl groups" doesn't automatically mean "Girl groups of the 1960s", and people are putting the Spice Girls, Destiny's Child, etc into this category. If anyone wants to have a category solely for 1960s groups they can always create a sub-cat "Girl groups of the 1960s" or whatever. 81.131.14.87 09:20, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Description needs to be expanded to avoid confusion

The description of the category should be altered from Any musical group consisting of entirely female members, especially in pop music. to Any musical group consisting of entirely female members, especially in pop music, who sing but do not play any musical instruments

This is to create a distinction between this category and that of Category:All-women_bands which deals with female bands who play instruments. At the moment, with the current description, Category:Girl_groups overlaps Category:All-women_bands.

Also, List_of_girl_groups already contains the description Girl groups are musical groups that only contain women members, who only sing and do not play any musical instruments.

The Girl group article continues this with (Girl groups) are distinct from girl bands and All-women bands, where the women sing and play instruments.

For these reasons, and to improve continuity between Category:Girl_groups, Girl group, and List_of_girl_groups, I've expanded the description.

Do groups like The Puppini Sisters and The Andrews Sisters really qualify as "girl groups"? The Spice Girls, totally. Shonen Knife, even. But The Andrews Sisters?? Exploding Boy 00:06, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Removing some of these acts -

First off I think there are too many "lists" here that fall under "all female" and then still end up getting acts/artists/bands put on them that do not really belong. So here we have a list whose description goes: "Any musical group consisting of entirely young female members, especially in pop music, who sing but do not play any musical instruments."

So with that in mind I am suggesting that a few things might change - first the wording of "entirely young female members" be changed to simply "all female". Secondly there is a basic difference between a "group" and a "band", the main one being that a "band" consists of members who play instruments. A "group" could be a "band" however the heading of this list is "girl groups" and the description goes on to define one as consisting of females "who sing but do not play any musical instruments". Thusly some that are on this list that for sure should not be are:

• The Donnas - A band.
• Fluffy - A band
• The Go-Gos - a band
• The Graces - a little grey area because, while the focus was on three females, they were never an "all female" band and of the three "graces" two always played guitar - firstly Charlotte and, in the beginning, Meridith. The second version Chrissy replaced Meridith. So while they could be considered a "girl group" to a degree the fact that two of them DID play musical instruments and the were NOT an "all female" band would exclude them from this list.
• Scandal - the name/listing itself is confusing because Scandal had a female singer who later went solo - but they were not an all female band or group ever. However upon closer inspection the link on this list goes to a wicki page for another Scandal - from Japan. Looking over their official website they seem to be a band and not a "girl group".
• The Pandoras (1960s band) - A band.
• Luscious Jackson - A band
• L7 - A band
• Klymaxx - a band

I am sure there are more - many of these listings have "band" after the names - if they are bands they should be removed, if they are a "girl group" as described here than the "band" should be removed. (i.e: Dream and TLC both have "band" after their listing however neither were a band) Soundvisions1 (talk) 04:09, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
