- 1970 – Canadian Pacific Railway operates its first unit train of coal destined for Japanese markets from Sparwood, British Columbia.[1]
- 1971 – On the eve of Amtrak's assumption of American passenger train operations, the United States Post Office Department cancels all but one of the eight remaining Railway Mail Service routes (postmark pictured); the final route served Washington, D.C., to New York City.[2]
- 1972 – British Rail suspends operation of the Brighton Belle passenger train between London and Brighton, England.
- 1985 – Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway assume joint operations of southern Ontario's Canada Southern Railway line.[1]
